7 Benefits of Ashwagandha

Posted by Dan Brigham on

Some people have called Ashwagandha “nature’s Xanax” and while that can ring true, unlike Xanax, it helps build up stamina (both mentally and physically) overtime. One of the main reasons we decided to use it in the Stamina Blend :)

Ashwagandha has been used in Hindu medicine and Ayurveda for thousands of years. Recently made more popular in mainstream western culture, we must make sure that Ashwagandha’s power and history are still honored and taken seriously. When done right, it can really make a difference for people.

Here are some benefits of Ashwagandha

Benefits of Ashwagandha

1. Ashwagandha can help you control stress

This is one of the main reasons people first seek out Ashwagandha- they need help with their stress. And Ashwagandha has been shown to decrease specific markers of stress, including certain heat shock proteins, JNK-1, and cortisol… to name a few. It can also reduce the activation of a firing HPA axis (hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal glands) which is really important if you want to learn how to deal with stress more effectively.

2. Ashwagandha may improve quality of sleep

With so many people battling sleep disorders, Ashwagandha may be a real help. In individuals who reported themselves as being really stressed, after 8 weeks, those who took Ashwagandha (compared to the placebo) reported back that they were experiencing higher quality sleep.

Ashwagandha has also been shown to promote more mental alertness upon waking. It has also been shown to help with insomnia.

3. Ashwagandha benefits brain health (cognitive function)

Multiple studies have been done on this. Reaction, mental alertness, executive function (flexible thinking, self-control, decision making, etc), performance on mental tasks… Ashwagandha has been shown to be effective in all these areas! Researchers have found that certain compounds in Ashwagandha have antioxidant effects in the brain.

4. Ashwagandha may improve athletic output

Athletes and work out people take note! Ashwagandha can be a wonderful supplement for exercise. Most studies are showing Ashwagandha can increase oxygen use and strength during athletic performance. Research showing it can increase VO2 is a big deal as this is a big indicator of health and how well someone can physically perform.

5. Ashwagandha may improve fertility in men

Fertility is not just a women’s issue! Oh no. Men can always use the help. Many times men need help with testosterone, and it can help that too!

Ashwagandha has been shown to increase the volume of semen, increase sperm concentration, and also increase sperm mobility! All things that are incredibly important for fertility.

6. Ashwagandha can help reduce blood sugar levels

Balancing blood sugar is so important! Especially for those with insulin disorders. Ashwagandha has shown to reduce blood sugar, insulin, A1c, blood lipids and other oxidative stress markers that many people with blood sugar issues deal with. Certain compounds in Ashwagandha provide very strong antidiabetic activity. This can help support your cells with taking in glucose from the bloodstream.

7. Ashwagandha may help reduce inflammation

Inflammation is at the root of premature aging and disease. Adding foods that are anti inflammatory to your diet (such as Ashwagandha) is very important. There are compounds in Ashwagandha that have been shown to reduce inflammation in the body.

One study that was super interesting was done on adults who were stressed out. They took Ashwagandha for 60 days and it resulted in them having significant reductions in an inflammatory marker called C-reative Protein. This was compared to a placebo group.
